Welcome
Welcome from the President and Executive Director
Through art, we embrace a diverse community-as art has done through the ages. I not only welcome you, I encourage you to add to the energy of the Indianapolis Art Center.
Our aim is to ignite the spark of creativity that resides in each of us. As a center for creativity, the 250 Studio classes we offer each semester range from life drawing to glass blowing, from still life painting to textiles, from photography to ceramics and steel and stone sculpture.
We stress accessibility through Michael Graves' open-armed architectural design of our building, by free admission to our galleries, which present 35 exhibitions each year by local, regional and international working artists, and our 12-acre campus, which features the beautiful ARTSPARK with its 27 site-specific public sculptures and lovely landscaping.
The organic energy of the Art Center encourages innovation and serves as an incubator for the arts to spawn entrepreneurship. This vitality attracted more than 285,300 people to attend classes, exhibitions, the Broad Ripple Art Fair, lectures, and special events onsite, and to participate in our Outreach Programs offsite.
A quote by Dr. Jane Moeser, University of Nebraska, epitomizes the importance of our role:
Only a concerned and enlightened citizenry will assure the victory of light over darkness, of freedom over tyranny, of creativity over suppression.
We are aware of the synergism created by our location, nestled on the urban/suburban line of Indianapolis, in the Broad Ripple Village Cultural District, enhanced by the flow of White River on our north boundary and the popular Monon Trail Greenways on our east boundary. We are dynamically connected to our extended community from downtown to the suburbs and beyond.
I and my dedicated staff and board of directors look forward to and welcome the addition of your creativity!
Joyce A. Sommers, President and Executive Director
